North Texas District Export Council (NTDEC) 2009 Annual Plan
Mission Statement:
The District Export Councils (DEC) contribute leadership and international trade expertise to complement the U.S. Commercial Service's (USDOC) export promotion efforts through counseling businesses on the exporting process and conducting trade education and community outreach.
The primary objectives of the NTDEC are to educate the community about free trade and its benefits and include 'how to' education to promote exports by companies in our area. The Council also lobbies state and federal legislatures to promote issues that can have a positive affect regarding international trade for the North Texas region. The NTDEC works specifically with the North Texas U.S. Export Assistance Center (USEAC) to accomplish our goals.
Education/Outreach/Commercial Resources Committee
Round Table
Education forum for exporters sponsored by the NTDEC and managed by Lorraine McCord, with the International Trade Development Center with DEC members serving as presenters of topics and participants to engender questions and answers to issues and topics. Members involved: A. Cook, M. Hinsey, B. Huddleston, L. Johnson, M. Kramer, D. Marlow, W. Neal, S. Heald, R. Schulze, D. Swart, A.J. Wichita. Meet monthly except summer with ISBDC developing programs and providing write-ups to summarize discussions.
Goal:
- Education, build on tremendous success of this program.
Global Market Series
Series of eight seminars on topics needed for exporters to be successful given twice annually. Sponsored by the NTDEC and managed by Lorraine McCord with the International Trade Development Center. DEC members serve as presenters.
Goal:
- Education, build on program success and expand member involvement.
Texas Exporters Resource Guide - Brenda Stoner/Karen Parker
Distribute and promote the Texas Resource Guide. Solicit comments, questions and suggestions for improving the guide in the future printings and include a list of FAQ´s from exporters and buyers.
Goal:
- Reprint 2009 - 2010 Edition
Exporting with the Experts - Brenda Stoner/Bill Neal
NTDEC will expand this program developed by the Texas Camino Real DEC. This is a program to introduce export marketing principles and practices from experienced exporters to prospective or early stage exporters through colleges and local learning institutions.
Goal:
- Train new instructors and expand program to include School of International
- Management with George Barnes at UTD.
Counseling - All
Each member will recognize DECs in their business outreach efforts, optional to use new DEC business cards, referrals from USDOC personnel or website, and to include diversity and rural outreach efforts.
Goal:
- Each member should counsel as requested by USDOC personnel.
- Develop two programs in rural communities.
Events - Scott Sullivan
We will present one all day program in the Jan-Apr time frame focusing on Foreign Trade Controls by expanding on our very successful half-day session held in July of 2008. Additionally, we will present two half-day events focusing on Free Trade Agreements and INCOTERMS; or as another option, consider a second all day program in conjunction with another organization or with another DEC.
Membership - Executive Committee
The Executive Committee will address all new applicants for membership in conjunction with the DEC Secretary (USEAC).
Goal:
- To attract and install new members who will further the DEC´s mission and be an active participant and contributor in all DEC events.
Commercial Resources/Marketing/Promote DEC - Jim Dawson
Increase recognition through various media outlets. Expand the networking Internet to group tool "Linked In".
Goal:
- Brand the DEC as the premier "hands on" export training group than can increase exports for SME´s.
Legislative/Trade Policy/Communications Committee
Legislative Affairs Committee - Daniel Ogden
Legislator Outreach
The NTDEC will hold individual meetings with targeted legislators to further their knowledge of the NTDEC and further the importance of international trade issues for the North Texas business community. NTDEC members will also visit their federal and state legislator offices to introduce DEC´s as a resource.
Goal:
- Focus on educating legislators about the benefits of free trade for North Texas.
Legislator Communications
The NTDEC will , on an occasional basis, communicate with North Texas legislators by letter, phone, or in writing regarding issues of vital interest to the North Texas international trade community.
Goal:
- Coordinate legislator communications with other Texas DEC´s on trade issues important to Texas.
International Trade Legislative Forums
The NTDEC will host, in conjunction with selected legislator offices, international trade legislative forums where North Texas exporters will be able to interface with legislators on various issues related to international trade. The NTDEC will also co-host these events with the U.S.Chamber of Commerce..
Goal:
- Emphasize discussion of the trade agendas of the new presidential administration and Congress and the likelihood of passage of free trade legislation in 2009.
NTDEC Website
Federal and state legislative developments and updates affecting the international trade community will be posted to the NTDEC website on a regular basis.
Goal:
- Work with Electronic Communications committee to develop an area on the NTDEC website for legislative updates.
Trade Policy Committee - Floyd McNeely
State Issues
Identify trade issues that are of common interest to all Texas DEC´s.
Goal:
- Coordinate with other Texas DEC´s trade policy comittee to work on issure that are of a common interest in Texas.
Electronic Communications Committee - Joe Sambrosky
Web Site Development
The NTDEC will work with the other Texas DEC´s to upgrade our website. Add FAQ´s regarding current issues and archive past data. NTDEC will work with the Camino Real DEC to develop web site advertising rate schedules as a method of raising money.
Goal:
- Keep Web site current by allowing each DEC to update their section.
