Statewide DEC Conference
Thursday, October 16, 2003 - Friday, October 17, 2003

Location:
Warwick Hotel
5701 Main St
Houston, TX

Contact:
Ray deSola

WHEN We start with a dinner cruise on Thursday, October 16, 2003, and end with a gala luncheon on Friday, October 17, 2003.

REGISTRATION First, you need to tell us you are coming by completing the Registration Form and faxing it to Ray deSola at 713-789-4530. Then, mail Ray a check for $50 to cover the registration fee. This is an all-inclusive fee (except your hotel room) entitling you to the boat tour, reception, dinner, shuttle bus, breakfast, coffee break, luncheon, goodie bag and all Conference materials.

HOTEL An amazingly low rate of $99 per night ($73 government rate) has been negotiated at the recently renovated historic Warwick Hotel overlooking Herman Park and Rice University. Those of you familiar with Houston know that this is also within walking distance of a host of museums, the zoo and the medical center. The regular price of these deluxe rooms is $160 (promo rate is $140) per night. The Warwick has agreed to extend this discounted rate to Friday and Saturday nights for those wishing to extend their visit. Staying at the Warwick and telling them that you are with the DEC is critical because we have been required to guarantee a minimum number of rooms in order to receive this discounted rate and to avoid an outrageous charge for use of the meeting room on Friday. So, for everybody from out-of-town, please stay at the Warwick. Make your reservation by calling the Hotel at 713-526-1991 (800-298-6199) or visiting their website at www.warwickhotelhouston.com The address is 5701 S. Main St.

TOUR/RECEPTION/DINNER Perhaps the standout event of the Conference will be the narrated tour of the Houston Ship Channel aboard the M/V Sam Houston. All of you have undoubtedly shipped merchandise through the Port of Houston which handles more international tonnage than any U.S. port and is one of the top six in the world. Here is your chance to get up-close and personal with the Port's facilities and whatever vessels are in port at that time. The boat will leave at 6:00 sharp and return to the dock at approx. 8:00 pm. You will enjoy an open bar and a full catered dinner. To eliminate the hassle of finding the dock in rush hour traffic, the Houston DEC will provide a free shuttle bus between the Warwick and the Port. The bus will leave the Warwick precisely at 5:15 pm. For security reasons, the Port requires that we give them the names of all attendees at least three days prior to the event. Just one more reason why you need to complete the Registration Form.

CONFERENCE Breakfast (included) will be served at 7:00 am on Friday in the Foyer outside the meeting room. Due to our full agenda, the Conference will start at 8:00 am in the Versailles Room on the top floor of the Warwick Hotel. The Versailles Room has a great view of the fabulous Mecom Fountain. The agenda is still being confirmed, but I can tell you that it will include a roll-out of the new DEC statewide website, presentation by Jay Brandes, the Director of the Iraq Reconstruction Task Force, presentation by Doug Baker (son of Sec James Baker) from the DOC Office of Service Industry, Tourism and Finance, the proposed Central American Free Trade Agreement-CAFTA (Rep Kevin Brady invited), and much more. The Conference will conclude with a key-note luncheon (included), getting you out the door by 2:00 pm, as promised.

P. S. Oh yes, the Planning Committee tells me that they are putting together an exciting "Goodie Bag" with lots of memorable "recuerdos" of your visit to Houston. We have tried to convey this message to all DEC members, DOC officials and related ex-officio members in the State. But, we might have missed somebody, so please share this announcement with fellow members.

Statewide DEC meeting held October 17th in Houston.
